Circumcision revision (repair) is performed after the original circumcision has unsatisfactory results. While uncommon, circumcision revision is sometimes required to restore the function or aesthetics of the penis after a previous circumcision. Men who had a prior circumcision as an infant or an adult and are unhappy about the procedure can opt for a revision procedure.

Below are common reasons why someone may need a circumcision revision.

Practitioner Inexperience: The primary reason for revision is practitioner inexperience. Circumcision is relatively straightforward; however, it does require exceptional skill and precision to achieve the best outcomes.

Circumcision is not a surgery that someone without formal medical education should perform. Why? Because penile anatomy is complex. Understanding the slight differences in anatomy from patient to patient allows a skilled doctor to alter the technique during the procedure for optimal results.

Redundant Foreskin: Also known as an incomplete circumcision, some patients may have too much foreskin left behind that partially or entirely covers the glans (head) of the penis when the penis is not erect. Too much foreskin can lead to inflammation, infections, urinary tract infections, and an unwanted cosmetic appearance. This is another one of the most common reasons for a circumcision repair.

Extensive Scarring: Sometimes, a patient can be left with noticeable scarring, including scars that are elevated, crooked, or thick. In most cases, scarring is purely a cosmetic concern (which is still a serious concern for most males). However, scar tissue can cause pain or uncomfortable “bowing” and curvature during erection or sexual activity in more severe cases.

Adhesions: Adhesions are fibrous bands of tissue or “skin bridges” that can form during the healing process, joining the rim of the head of the penis to the circumcision scar. A “penile skin bridge” develops when the shaft of the penis becomes attached to the tip of the penis. Adhesions can cause substantial pain and discomfort during erections.

Frenulum Breve: Another common condition that requires circumcision revision is a short frenulum, also called frenulum breve. A frenulum is a fibrous band of tissue that connects one part of your anatomy to another. For example, the band of tissue that connects your tongue to the floor of your mouth is also a type of frenulum.

The penis also has a frenulum; it’s located beneath the head (glans), and it helps retract or pull back the foreskin during erection. When this frenulum is too short, the foreskin doesn’t easily retract, and tension develops, often causing pain and sometimes tears in the skin. Frenulum breve can be easily corrected with a simple procedure called a frenulectomy (sometimes referred to as a frenectomy, frenulectomy, or frenotomy) that restructures the frenulum, so it doesn’t tug and pull.
