What is newborn circumcision?
Circumcision is the removal of the foreskin that covers the head of penis. It might be done for religious reasons, family, or cultural preference.
Sometimes there are medical reasons why circumcision is advisable.
Most newborn circumcisions take place within the first week or so after their birth. This is the best time to perform a circumcision and carries the least expense and minimal risks when done by circumcision specialists.
How is newborn circumcision performed?
The Plastibell circumcision device is a clear, lightweight plastic in the shape of a bell with an attached handle (see photograph). It comes in various sizes to fit newborns, infants, and toddlers. The bell portion is designed to cover the glans while the foreskin is pulled over it and secured with a string (ligature). The ligature sits in a groove at the top of the bell so that when tied, the ligature will compress the excess foreskin, cutting off its circulation. The unwanted foreskin can now be removed by trimming around the bell while it protects the glans from injury. This is done under local anesthesia so the procedure and recovery is virtually pain free.
The key is choosing the correct size device since too large a bell will cause excessive tension on the remaining foreskin and pull the bell over the glans onto the penile shaft. On the other hand, if the bell size chosen is too small, an inadequate amount of foreskin could be removed and/or excessive pressure on the glans could result in a visible deformity. An experienced provider will choose the appropriate size device and perform the procedure in 5-10 minutes. Healing time is approximately 10-14 days.
Pain Management
Does baby circumcision hurt?
While newborns are not likely to remember anything about circumcision, focusing on pain prevents babies from experiencing trauma. To reduce pain in newborns, practitioners at Gentle Circumcision give an anesthetic known as buffered lidocaine. This simply means using lidocaine with added saline to remove the uncomfortable “sting” of the lidocaine (similar to what one experiences before a dental procedure). As an option, ( with parents permission), newborns are provided a pacifier dipped in a concentration of sugar water, which research shows minimizes discomfort. We also offer a soothing, music environment, which research also has shown to relax babies. After the procedure, parents can give their babies acetaminophen (infant Tylenol) to alleviate any discomfort after circumcision. Combined, each of these techniques allows your newborn to experience a virtually pain-free recovery.

Advances In Pain Management
Throughout our existence, we have been working to ensure that we adopt the most advanced technologies, treatments, and procedures available to enhance pain management. In today’s world, an adult circumcision is not something to fear – in fact, it is something that you could consider life changing.
Thanks to advances in pain management, we can offer an innovative approach that combines no-needle
Injections and local anesthesia to create a painless experience.
Needle-Free Injections
For many of our patients, there is concern around a needle injection for numbing the pain during the circumcision. The procedure is always performed with a fully-awake patient, which makes it much more daunting for many patients.
However, with needle-free injections, we are able to offer our patients local anesthesia, which numbs the circumcision area prior to, during, and after the conclusion of the procedure. This needle-free experience is virtually painless and simple in principal. The needle-free administration of anesthesia uses a medical grade jet to deliver a high-pressure jet stream of anesthesia directly to the impacted area. The anesthesia penetrates locally at the injection site and onset is almost immediate. The jet is nearly half the circumference of a regular needle and therefore, significantly less painful. The jet injection method is not just being used in circumcision procedures, but also in dental procedures and vaccines as well. Needle-free injections have resulted in very high satisfaction among patients of varying procedures due to the very low pain and discomfort reports across the board.
