Newborn Circumcision

Circumcision is the removal of the foreskin that covers the head of the penis. Parents may choose to circumcise their newborns for religious reasons, family, or cultural preference. Sometimes there are medical reasons why circumcision is advisable.

Most newborn baby circumcisions take place within the first two weeks after birth. This is the best time to circumcise a newborn and carries minimal risks when done by circumcision specialists.

The Plastibell circumcision device is a clear, lightweight plastic in the shape of a bell with an attached handle. It comes in various sizes to fit newborns, infants, and toddlers.

The bell portion is designed to cover the glans while the foreskin is pulled over it and secured with a string (ligature). The ligature sits in a groove at the top of the bell. When tied, the ligature will compress the excess foreskin, cutting off its circulation.

The unwanted foreskin can now be removed by trimming around the bell which protects the glans from injury. This is done under local anesthesia so that the procedure and recovery time is virtually pain free.

An experienced circumcision specialist will choose the appropriate size plastibell device and perform the procedure in 10 minutes. Healing time is approximately 10-14 days.

While newborns are not likely to remember anything about circumcision, focusing on pain prevents babies from experiencing trauma. To reduce pain in newborns, practitioners at Gentle Circumcision give an anesthetic known as buffered lidocaine.

If parents give permission, we offer newborns a pacifier dipped in sugar water. Research shows this minimizes discomfort. We also offer a soothing music environment, which research also has shown to relax babies. After the procedure, parents can give their babies acetaminophen (infant Tylenol) to alleviate any discomfort after circumcision.
