Children one year of age and older require general (sleep) anesthesia
and a nerve block. If general anesthesia is contraindicated or
undesirable, a sedative in combination with the nerve block is an
effective option ( see
conscious sedation).
- Circumcisions for age this age group are performed on Wednesday mornings.
- Your child is evaluated by a physician and laboratory tests are performed soon after arriving at the hospital.
- Surgery begins at approximately 9:00 a.m.
- Patient is given a mild sedative, intubated with a breathing tube and administered general anesthesia.
- To eliminate pain, a nerve block is given before your child wakes.
- Your child rests in the recovery room and, once his condition is stable, is usually discharged before 12:00 noon.
- He can return to school within 3-4 days with restricted activity.
- A return visit for a check-up is scheduled for 2 weeks after the surgery.
- Complete healing is achieved in approximately 3 weeks.
